BISMARCK, ND — The 91�ε� is set to host its 52nd Annual Jazz Festival, a much-anticipated tradition in the Bismarck-Mandan community and beyond. The festival culminates in a public concert on Saturday, February 1, at 7:30 p.m. at the Belle Mehus Auditorium in downtown Bismarck. General admission tickets are $15 and available online at www.umary.edu/jazz, at the door, or in person at Eckroth Music (cash or check only). 91�ε� students, faculty, and staff can attend for free with their M-card.

The festival, established in 1974, has grown into one of the largest jazz events in the region. Its centerpiece is the Saturday evening concert, which features world-renowned guest artists performing alongside 91�ε�’s top musical groups: the Jazz Combo, Vocal Jazz, and Jazz Ensemble.

This year’s guest artists represent some of the finest talent from across the country:

•&�Բ�����;Jeff Jarvis (trumpet, California): A seasoned performer, Jarvis is a veteran of the jazz world and previously graced the 91�ε� Jazz Festival stage in 1994. He has an extensive discography and is widely regarded as a master educator and trumpeter.

•&�Բ�����;Rick Hirsch (saxophone, Pennsylvania): Hirsch, a composer and performer, participated in the festival as a virtual adjudicator during the pandemic in 2021. His innovative approach to jazz combines traditional roots with modern sensibilities.

•&�Բ�����;Mike Conrad (piano, Iowa): Conrad is an award-winning jazz pianist and arranger whose works have been performed by professional and collegiate ensembles nationwide.

•&�Բ�����;Pete James Johnson (drums and composer, Minnesota): Known for his intricate rhythms and compositional depth, Johnson is a rising star in the jazz scene.

•&�Բ�����;Aric Schneller (trombone and vocals, Texas): Schneller is celebrated for his versatility as a trombonist and vocalist, bringing an energetic and soulful approach to his performances.

•&�Բ�����;Christine Salerno (vocals, Wisconsin): Salerno is an accomplished jazz vocalist known for her dynamic range and captivating stage presence.

Dr. Brian Lydeen, the festival’s director and a 91�ε� alum, is thrilled about this year’s event. “The 91�ε� Jazz Festival has become an institution in our community and continues to showcase incredible talent year after year,” said Lydeen. “This year’s lineup of guest artists and the collaboration with our student ensembles will make for an unforgettable evening. There’s a unique magic when these professionals perform and share their expertise—it’s inspiring for everyone involved.”

The festival serves as both a celebration of jazz and an educational opportunity for aspiring musicians. On Friday, January 31, and Saturday, February 1, the guest artists will adjudicate performances of approximately 1,000 high school and junior high students from across North Dakota. These students will also participate in 30-minute master classes led by the guest artists, gaining invaluable insights into jazz performance and technique.

“Having these world-class musicians adjudicate and mentor young students is a vital part of the festival,” Lydeenadded. “It’s not just about performances—it’s about learning, growing, and connecting through jazz. For many of these students, this festival is a pivotal moment in their musical journeys.”

The 91�ε� Jazz Festival has a storied history of hosting some of the greatest names in jazz, including Jeff Coffin, Jon Faddis, Tom “Bones” Malone, and The New York Voices. The event continues to foster a love for jazz in the region while providing 91�ε� students with unique opportunities to perform alongside and learn from some of the best in the industry.
